Through personal conversations and behind the scenes tours, delegates will connect one-on-one with service-providers, experts in the field, advocates, women and young people. In August, 2009, PAI's Study Tour will travel to Kenya, a country known for its magnificent wildlife and ancient culture. Once touted as a family planning success story, Kenya has seen its major health indicators stagnate or worsen, particularly in the area of sexual and reproductive health.
Delegates will explore factors that eroded Kenya’s success and learn what is happening at the local and national levels to get family planning back on track. The challenges of HIV/AIDS prevention among married women and in the context of restrictive HIV/AIDS policies will be illuminated through discussions with Kenyan community leaders, HIV/AIDS experts, service providers and women, some of whom appear in PAI documentaries that explore the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa: The Silent Partner: HIV and Marriage (2008) (www.silentpartnerfilm.com) and Abstaining from Reality (2007). Study Tour delegates will visit small rural communities on Lake Victoria, Kenya’s lush tea growing region, as well as have the opportunity to take part in a safari in Kenya’s famous Masai Mara game park.

2008 Friends’ Study Tour to Mexico
PAI led a Friends’ Study Tour to Mexico in June 2008, where delegates spent a week learning about Mexico’s pressing sexual and reproductive health and rights issues and absorbing its colorful culture. Delegates met passionate sexual and reproductive health and rights advocates, medical providers, women living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and young people. Through one-on-one conversations, delegates gained a personal understanding of the needs and challenges of the women, men and young people working to improve access to family planning and reproductive health services. For more details about the Study Tour to México, read the Friends’ Study Tour to Mexico Newsletter and PAI’s blogs from Mexico.
