International Family Planning Programs Receive Nearly Twenty Percent Increase

International family planning and reproductive health programs have received a much-needed increase in funding, thanks to the recent adoption of the fiscal year 2009 omnibus spending bill (H.R. 1105).  This bill, signed into law by President Obama on March 11, includes a total of $545 million for bilateral and multilateral family planning and reproductive health programs, an increase of $82 million, or 18%, above current levels.  PAI applauds Congress on this increase, which brings funding back to the second highest level in the program’s history, but is also working to achieve far larger increases in future budgets.
