New Advocacy Film, The Silent Partner, Premieres in Nairobi

The world premiere of The Silent Partner: HIV in Marriage, PAI's latest documentary, drew more than 170 community leaders, members of the media and local and international advocates together in Nairobi, Kenya late last month. The release of the 12-minute advocacy film was timed to coincide with the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender violence (Nov 25-Dec10) and World AIDS Day (Dec 1).  Silent Partner was filmed in Kenya earlier this year with the aid of several local NGOs—the Centre for the Study of Adolescence, Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya, and Men for Gender Equality Now, as well as Pathfinder International/Kenya—so it was fitting that we launched it Nairobi in conjunction with them and under their leadership.

These initiatives include a white paper that lays out the rationale and changes needed in order for the United States to regain its historic leadership role on international family planning and reproductive health.

Support PAI's Work Around the World

We know that these are trying economic times for all of us; but imagine what life is like right now for women in the developing world who struggle every day to nourish their children and bring health and dignity to their families. As wealthy nations find solutions to the economic crisis, we cannot leave the world’s voiceless and vulnerable behind. Their future depends on us—now, more than ever. Population Action International (PAI) works on behalf of the more than 1 billion people who live and support their families on less than a dollar a day.

Join PAI by making a contribution now as we work to improve the lives of women and their families and secure vital resources for family planning, reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Join a 2009 PAI Friends’ Study Tour and go “behind the scenes” of international family planning in the field!

PAI has two exciting Study Tours planned for 2009. In May, PAI will lead delegates to Peru, one of Latin America's most breathtaking and culturally rich countries. We will explore the family planning and reproductive health needs of Peruvian women and meet the heroes who deliver services and contraceptives to Peru’s most marginalized. In August, PAI's Study Tour will travel to Kenya, a country known for its magnificent wildlife and ancient culture. Delegates will hear first-hand from HIV-positive women and youth about their unique family planning needs and will interact with reproductive health leaders and experts dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention in their communities and country. Study Tour delegations will also spend time exploring the cultural and geographic wonders of both countries. For more information, contact Christine Bixiones at cbixiones@popact.org or 202-557-3425

Take advantage of the extended Tax Relief Act!

Giving through your Individual Retirement Account before the end of 2009 takes advantage of the Charitable IRA Rollover which permits taxpayers age 70½ and older to make tax-free charitable gifts totaling up to $100,000 per year from traditional IRAs and Roth IRA’s. This gift does count toward your annual IRA distribution requirement. PAI is an eligible charity for these gifts, but contributions must be made by December 31, 2009 to take advantage of the tax benefit.
