Internships

Our world is changing and fast!

Are you interested in joining the massive global effort to improve public health, sexual and reproductive rights, women’s rights, maternal and child health, family planning and the environment? PAI offers a professional internship program, which engages interns with crucial issues and sharpens their career skills.

PAI's Internship Program

PAI's Internship Program offers both undergraduate and graduate internships at our Washington, DC office. Positions are offered in a variety of departments including: Research, International Advocacy, Executive Support, Resource Development, Communications, Information Technology, Information Resourcing, Special Projects and more! All interns are required to work 20 hours per week in our office and attend 2 external meetings of their choice.

Each intern will work with their supervisor to get the most out of their PAI experience. We encourage interns to present and report on work they are doing. Communication with PAI staff is encouraged.

 

The Internship Program is offered 3 terms:

  • Fall Term (September 8th – November 20th )
  • Spring Term (January 18th – April 9th)
  • Summer Term (May 24th – July 30th)


All programs include an orientation day and luncheon.

Media Relations Internship

Background

Population Action International (PAI), an independent policy group working to make clear the linkages among population, reproductive health, the environment, and development, has an immediate opening for a qualified intern to work in the Department of Communications.  The Media Relations intern will work in an extremely fast-paced, deadline-oriented department to support PAI’s media and outreach efforts.  This will involve staying current with relevant news, contacting media outlets, and maintaining a database of media contacts.

Description of Responsibilities:

The intern’s scope of work may involve all or most of the following activities:   

  • Maintain and build on existing media lists for strategic media outreach
  • Support various media outreach efforts
  • Prepare news and media reports for staff and donors
  • Fulfill external requests for publications
  • Prepare daily news clipping emails for staff
  • Assist in writing blogs and articles
  • Provide general administrative support as needed

Time 

  • 20 hrs/week 
  • Internship duration:   January 18, 2010- April 9, 2010

Communications Internship

Background

Population Action International (PAI), an independent policy group working to make clear the linkages among population, reproductive health, the environment, and development, has an immediate opening for a qualified intern to work in the Department of Communications. The Communications intern will work in an extremely fast-paced, deadline-oriented department in order to support PAI’s media and outreach efforts.

Responsibilities:

The Communications intern will work with the Communications team to develop and maintain PAI’s online presence on social networking sites, including Facebook, MySpace, Change.org and YouTube’s nonprofit channel. The intern will also assist the department with other writing and editing tasks.

Description of Tasks:

The intern’s scope of work may involve all or most of the following activities:   

  • Maintaining PAI’s social networking sites and web site
  • Writing blog posts and other articles as needed
  • Online outreach including partnering with like-minded organizations on social networking sites
  • Helping develop/implement a strategic plan for social networking
  • Assisting with other PAI communications tasks as needed
  • Prepare daily media clippings for staff

Time 

  • 20 hrs/week 
  • Internship duration:   January 18, 2010- April 9, 2010
  • Unpaid

Qualifications

  • Experience with social networking sites and other Web 2.0/new media
  • Writing and editing skills
  • Enthusiasm for outreach and education

Library Internship

Background

Population Action International (PAI)—an independent policy group working to improve individual well-being and preserve global resources by mobilizing political and financial support for population, family planning and reproductive health policies and programs—is seeking a Library Intern. The PAI library supports the day-to-day information needs of a creative staff who conduct research and advocacy in support of women’s reproductive health and rights worldwide.  We are offering an opportunity for an intern to gain valuable traditional and specialized experience in our active research Library.

The intern will work closely with the PAI library staff and, based on interests and skills, will participate in work on special projects as well as standard library technical and reference services.

Description of Tasks

  • Assisting with reference and circulation services
  • Deaccessioning items and shelf-shifting
  • Performing original cataloging for electronic documents (mostly PDFs)
  • Adding descriptive metadata to PAI’s photography collection using Extensis Portfolio
  • Other duties as assigned

Time

  • Part-time, up to 20 hrs/wk
  • January 18 – April 9, 2010
  • Unpaid.

Supervisor

  • Mary Panke, Director of Knowledge Resourcing

Qualifications

  • Graduate student currently enrolled in library/information sciences program.
  • Very detail-oriented. Strong interest in information organization and customer service.
  • Strong computer skills are required.
  • Basic cataloging skills are desirable.

Information Technology Intern

An Information Technology Intern is being sought by Population Action International (PAI), an independent policy group working to improve individual well-being and preserve global resources by mobilizing political and financial support for population, family planning and reproductive health policies and programs.  PAI strives to create a world in which humanity and the natural environment exist in balance, fewer people live in poverty, and every person has a right and access to sexual and reproductive health.

The Information Technology Intern will work with the Manager of Information Technology to complete equipment and software inventories to aid developing an ITIL V3 service catalog at PAI. Additional responsibilities will include providing general administrative support to the Information Technology Department as needed. This internship will provide the intern with practical experience in managing equipment, managing software (which includes managing the patch cycle), and in implementation of parts of the ITIL V3 service catalog all in the framework undertaking those tasks while maintaining smoothly running IT services for the organization and its end users.

Description of Tasks:

  • Idle equipment inventory: testing, upgrading, repairing and grading all equipment including operating system and application patching.
  • LAN room equipment inventory: label all servers on the KVM switches; neaten all patch cables; inventory and organize peripherals; week out unnecessary items.
  • Software/application inventory: finalize the software catalog so all software documentation is updated (version, date of purchase, renewal/anniversary dates, place of purchase).
  • Work with Manager of IT to create and implement ITIL V3 service catalog.

Qualifications: 

  • A+ hardware certification or 2 years experience/equivalent education for computer equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow direction.
  • Working knowledge of information technology and systems documentation, attention to detail, and experience writing systems documentation.
  • An understanding of the ITIL V3 framework is desirable.

Time: 

  • Part Time 15-20 hours/week
